Moon, a character in her own right she has been a shy young dog, but since starting her role with the pack this year, has come on in leaps and bounds, often leading the team on our hunting days. She is quite laid back and will quietly lie around the house, but take her out in the field and we have an excited dog, raring to go. Her nose work is excellent and she will track, nose down, for hours in pursuit of rabbits. Her intelligence is excellent and you can watch her working things out, and although her anticipation of the next command was sometimes over enthusiastic, we worked through that and she is now showing much more patience.
She is an agile and fast dog, will run a lot more than Cariad when she is at work with me and has clocked up a 24 km run before jumping up on the ATV for a rest. She can clear a 2m fence. Her future is looking good and she is presently under going training for a new role, involving use of all her experience of the last few months, but more about later.
Before I departed for a year working down on the sub Antarctic Macquarie Island (Feb. 2013) I was starting to work Moon on the few sheep I kept, although enthusiastic she was coming along nicely. As I said, I like them to be versatile. It has taken a while to get the team back on track since coming back from Macquarie and the change in life and work since returning, for me and the dogs, but we are doing well.
Moon also accompanied Rachel to work, alternating with Cariad. Depending on what child was being seen by Rachel depended on what dog she would take. Rachel has now returned to the UK, but their spell as occasional therapy dogs showed the versatility and highlighted the kind nature of Cariad and Moon.
